Insulating Your New Build Home
This is the level of airtightness taping that we are advocating for to all new build properties in Northern Ireland, we shouldn’t be accepting any less. ‘Good enough’ shouldnt cut it anymore, with the value of housing, the rising cost of labour and materials, why do we accept half-assed attempts at airtightness sealing, just to achieve worst-case building control targets. results of 4-6m3/hr/m2 are bang average and we can do better. We have a wealth of talented trades people, self-builders/DIYers to create a super insulated, zero gap airtight envelope if we talk about it at an early stage and invest some time and money in the process. We have a small group of local engaged, interested tradespeople who would be happy to talk through these principles, or provide a sealing service to you.
You need to consider airtightness all or nothing approach, theres no point just taping windows or installing a roof membraine as air will flow to the weakest points of the building.
What is this weakest point of the building? Answer: the intermediate floor void. you can airtight paint the entire perimeter, you can wrap an airtight membrane around the joists of slabs but if theres one hole for a duct or one hole for a cable youve ventilated the entire structure meaning every internal floor perimeter or lights from the ground floor ceilings have the potential to leak.
